An increase in crime of a violent nature throughout the world has resulted in personal
safety becoming an important issue for anyone planning to travel abroad. Unless you have been to your chosen destination before, or someone whose opinion you trust has made a particular recommendation, then it is quite right that you should exercise caution in respect of protecting you and your family.
With serious crime right on our doorsteps in our home countries, it is perhaps sensible that we should be worried about what we might encounter in a country we don’t know. It may even be logical to assume that it will be worse than we are accustomed to and, for this reason, many travellers choose to spend their annual vacations in ‘all-inclusive’ hotel complexes in the belief that, in today’s world, they are the safest
places to be. With trips to developing countries, where there may be unstable governments, terrorism, street crime & poverty, this may well be the case, with all your creature comforts being provided within a safe, controlled area.
The myth that this principle applies to European countries is one that is very successfully perpetuated by the big tour operators because it gives them greater control of customers and
their disposable incomes. The fact is that, away from the big cities, Greece is just about the safest place to visit in Europe. In Corfu particularly, crime & theft are rare and local people are honest to a point that would astonish you. Cars & houses are still left unlocked and should anyone be seen acting suspiciously, he or she would quickly be checked out by the local community. Very little happens in a small village like Roda without it being noticed by someone who is passionate about retaining these traditional values and the reputation of the village as a safe international destination.
If you are at all concerned about safety on your holiday, then speak to others who have been coming to Roda for many years and are only too happy to reassure you. It is not necessary to limit the enjoyment of your annual holiday by confining yourself to an all-inclusive complex.
Safety First!
“Conditions in Corfu as elsewhere in Greece are somewhat different from those encountered in some ‘civilized’ countries. Here there are no sex killings, no murdering gangsters, no robberies with violence, no riots, no hooligan mob demonstrations, no compromise with terrorism, and no crippling strikes.”
