The last few weeks of the season are always a strange time as that twice-yearly readjustment eases the carefree Roda of the summer into its winter cloak. When tour operators used to pack the village with discounted end-of-season bookings, the crossover was more clearly defined and left local people slightly dazed as the last coach-loads disappeared into the distance.
These days, with some tour operators switching off whole countries in October for reasons of profit, with flight-only companies continuing throughout the month, with independent travellers, ex-pats and those travelling by road breaking all of the conventional rules, then the end of the season is no longer a single day in Roda. Consider for a moment that when the season ended promptly, all the businesses in the village knew what came next, they knew when to close and were able to plan for the winter. Today?? – it’s not that easy, with some accommodation complexes closing down in early October and others continuing to the     
end, some now available throughout the year, what do bars & restaurants do? If they are family-run, if they own the premises,
the winter but many have stayed open and several will do right so through. Late season visitors may have less choice, but the  
bars & restaurants still open have more people and more atmosphere. If you think that mid summer in Roda is relaxing, you should try coming in May or, particularly, in October. Now is the time when all the local people who have been working hard for almost six months start again to appear in the village, greeting old friends with much laughter & enthusiasm. For a couple of weeks, it is though the village is having a fiesta to celebrate the passing of another season. And the weather? – who knows, and who cares?
then maybe there is a case to stay open. If they are paying rent & hiring staff, then the options are quite different.
Just two weeks ago, we turned on to the seafront by the Afrodite Hotel and, there before our eyes was ….. nothing! Well, almost nothing as, after months of seeing a long row of cars parked along the beach, there were just five vehicles looking all lost & lonely. And now, there isn’t a single car as the village has returned to a haven of peace & tranquillity – apart from Sotiris’ tractor, that is! Over the last week or two, many of the businesses closed for
